The Science, Technology, and Engineering Professionals (STEP-UAW) are a diverse group of professionals who are responsible for designing and maintaining critical lab infrastructure including software and systems development, engineering, IT support, safety and environmental health, and facilities management. Our work is a critical part of what keeps the lab running and producing ground-breaking science.

Despite our important role we still struggle with issues such as paying increasing costs of living in the already expensive Bay Area of California. At the same time we face unstable funding and uncertainty regarding employment stability and treatment of visa workers.

As it stands the UC is the sole decision maker regarding our compensation and working conditions and can change them at their own discretion. With a union we will be able to have a say as to our compensation and working conditions with the backing of the UAW. Additionally we will join the many scientific staff in the Lab and in the wider UC that are already unionized as part of the union of postdocs, academic researchers, graduate students, and project scientists (UAW 4811).
